What is the Orton-Gillingham Approach?

The Orton-Gillingham approach is a widely used teaching method in NJ. It is a direct and explicit, language-based, and Multisensory teaching approach that is specifically designed to help struggling readers. The method was developed in the 1930s by Dr. Samuel T. Orton who was a Neuro-psychiatrist and Pathologist and Anna Gillingham, an educator and psychologist. This highly structured approach introduced the idea that includes breaking the words to make it easy to read and spell down and building up of these skills over time. It also opens up the way of the multisensory approach that is highly beneficial and effective for the children with dyslexia.  
 
On what factor does Orton Gillingham focus on?

Orton-Gillingham is one of the teaching approaches that helps kids to read at the word level. In general, it focuses on developing multiple pathways that help the kids to learn. It lay stress on the understanding of “how” and “why” behind reading. It makes the children with dyslexia to understand the rules and patterns behind the sound and use of the particular letter in the word. With the help of this approach, students are able to decode the word and can spell it easily.

Orton Gillingham is an approach, not a program. This is because it is flexible with the student’s need. A program contains certain factors but the OG approach helps the teacher to understand his or her student’s need and customize the teaching way according to their need. It involves analytic and rigid instructions that are used by the teacher in analyzing the day to day performance of the student and improving in the field where he or she is lacking. This helps the student in developing self-confidence.

Orton-Gillingham approach in NJ emphasizes on effortless reading by the students so that their energies can be prevented from skipping or guessing words. OG approach helps in understanding the structure of the language and comes out with the simple way to make the things understand easily. It does not focus on memorizing words and spellings but help in developing critical thinking skills.

Thus, OG approach is the best and the simplest teaching method that ensures you in development of a better skills of your child who is facing with any kind of reading challenges.
